This month, June, is Acne Awareness Month. This was created to reduce the negative stigma around acne and to educate the public about the condition.
I know how it feels to have acne, as I’ve suffered with it most of my life. Which is why I’m so passionate about helping you to feel more confident in your own skin.
Let’s dive in to what acne is, what causes it and what treatments Christchurch Derma Spa offers that could help with your acne and any associated scarring.
What is Acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It’s condition where the hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. This blockage can lead to various forms of acne, including whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts..
Because acne is often found on the face it can really impact the confidence of those who have it. While acne is most common amongst teenagers, it can affect people of all ages.
What Causes Acne?
Acne can start at any age but is often linked to hormonal changes, particularly during puberty but also during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. The other causes of acne are:
Excess Sebum Production: Sebum is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands and lubricates the skin and hair. Excessive sebum production can clog pores, leading to acne.
Bacteria: The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is commonly found on the skin of most people. As well as in pores, hair follicles and in other areas of the body. Abnormal sebum can change the activity of this bacterium and cause it to become more aggressive, causing inflammation and pus.
Clogged Hair Follicles: When dead skin cells accumulate in hair follicles, they can combine with sebum to create a plug. This blockage can cause whiteheads or blackheads.
Genetics: A family history of acne can increase the likelihood of developing the condition, indicating a genetic predisposition.
Acne Treatments in Christchurch
Although the Drs often prescribe a number of creams and ointments to treat acne, most people find these aren’t as effective as they hope. Which is where professional acne treatments come in.
The pictures below show the before and after of a client who we have been supporting on their acne journey. They aren’t finished with their treatments but the difference in their skin is incredible, I’m sure you’ll agree.
These are the treatments we offer, that can really help with acne.
Chemical Peels: These can help with calming inflamed skin, exfoliating blocked pores and reducing oil production. They can also help even out your skin tone and reduce the appearance of acne scars. Chemical peels can be a great place to start your journey with acne treatments.
IPL Laser: IPL laser treatments can target and remove skin cells that are affected by acne, as well as reduce the overproduction of oil from your sebaceous glands.
Microdermabrasion: This treatment can help reduce acne scarring. It works by exfoliating the outer layer of your skin.
CACI Synergy Purifying: This treatment offers the same benefits as a Hydrafacial, tackling problematic skin. It uses a combination of red and blue LED light, deep cleansing and exfoliation techniques.
Not all treatments are suitable for all patients, so you will need to have a consultation first to discuss the right treatment plan for you and your skin.
