Wondering how to look after your skin in the winter months? This guide will show you how.
When winter arrives, it brings with it a few factors that can really influence how your skin looks and feels. Colder temperatures, more windy walks, having your heating on and in the lead up to Christmas eating those extra sweet treats, can all impact your skin.
To keep your skin feeling healthy and hydrated in the winter months, you want to change up your skincare routine.
So, what does that mean? In this blog I’ll be sharing what you can do to support your skin this winter.
Swap to a more hydrating cleanser
When you cleanse your skin in the winter it’s important to use a gentle, hydrating cleanser that won’t strip your skin of it’s natural oils. It’s those oils that will keep your skin feeling soft and supple.
A cream or oil based cleanser can be a good option for colder months, I’d recommend The AlumierMD Hydraboost Cleanser.
Choose a richer moisturiser
In the winter the air around us is much drier, which means our skin dries out much more quickly than in the humid summer months.
That’s why I’d recommend choosing a richer moisturiser with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides or squaline.
The Hydrarich moisturiser from Alumier MD would be a great option.
Continue wearing SPF every day
Just because it’s winter and you can’t see the sun, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still be using SPF every day. The UV rays are still there, even if the sun isn’t!
Include a hydrating serum in your routine
In the winter particularly, or if you have dry skin at all times, I recommend including a hydrating serum in your daily skincare routine. You want to choose something with hyaluronic acid and apply it to your skin before your moisturiser.
The Ultimate Boost serum from AlumierMD would be my recommended serum.
Add in an overnight mask for intense nourishment
If your skin is particularly struggling or you want to maintain a fresh, glowy look throughout the winter, you can add in an overnight mask a couple of times a week to give your skin an extra boost of moisture.
Exfoliate – but gently does it!
When your skin is dry, it’s normal for dead skin cells to build up. It’s important to clear those away by using a gentle exfoliator. On your body you can use an exfoliating brush but on your face you want to be extra gentle. Using something like the AHA Renewal Serum from AlumierMD would be great, as it doesn’t cause friction directly on the surface of your skin.
Don’t forget your lips
We’ve all had chapped lips in the winter and it’s not nice, is it? Like your face, your lips are nearly always exposed to the elements but we often forget about looking after them. Use a good quality nourishing lip balm with ingredients like beeswax, shea butter and vitamin e. The trick is to use it frequently, not just when your lips already feel dry.
How to help your dry hands
Some people suffer more than others when it comes to dry, chapped hands in the winter. One of the things that can really dry your hands out is washing up – so if you don’t have a dishwasher, make sure you’re wearing washing up gloves, especially in the winter when your skin will struggle more to hydrate itself.
Apply a thick hand cream when you can. If you don’t like the feeling of it, apply it when you go to bed and use something lighter throughout the day. Something with lanolin in can be really hydrating.
Keep hydrated
Hydrate yourself from the outside in and make sure you’re drinking enough water. You might be surprised how much this can help your skin stay hydrated. It’s easy to skip the water in the winter when it’s not hot but it’s vital for your skin you continue to drink plenty of water and clear liquids.
