What is rosacea?

April is Rosacea Awareness Month, so it seemed like to perfect time to dive in and answer the question, ‘What is rosacea?’ 🤔

Many of my clients don’t even realise they have rosacea. They come to see me concerned about their red face or the fact that they always look hot and flushed, even though they don’t feel it. Looking at their skin and listening to their concerns, I can see that they have rosacea.

So what is rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition which usually occurs on the face. It mainly affects people with fair skin, but it can affect all skin types. It usually occurs in people aged 40 to 60 years old. It is more common in women, but when affecting men, it may be more severe.

A chronic condition, rosacea can persist for a long time and tends to fluctuate in how severe it is. Rosacea usually affects the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose and is characterised by persistent redness caused by dilated blood vessels, small bumps and pus-filled spots similar to acne. There may also be uncomfortable inflammation of the surface of the eyes and eyelids.

What causes rosacea?

Unfortunately, the cause of rosacea is not yet fully understood. Your genetics, immune system factors, and environmental factors may all play a part.

There are a variety of triggers that may make rosacea worse. These include alcohol 🍷, exercise 🏃‍♀️, high ☀️ and low ❄️ temperatures, hot drinks ☕, spicy foods 🍛 and stress 😠. Rosacea can also be sun sensitive.

Thankfully, the right skincare products and treatments can make a huge difference
